Podcast hosts Liam Hughes and Corey Taratuta will be a long, long way from Tipperary this January when they drive from the shores of Lake Michigan to the Pacific Coast in search of all things Irish-American. The duo will journal their Irish-American Roadtrip via podcast, blog and YouTube as well as interact with their audience via comments and social media outlets like Twitter and Facebook.
The month-long adventure will take them from Milwaukee to Los Angeles and back, and they’re relying on their listeners, readers and viewers to help plan their itinerary. So far they’ve been invited to make Irish oatmeal soap, play the Celtic harp, retrace the steps of gold rushing Irish-Americans and there have been plenty of offers to stop by for a pint of stout or a cup of tea.
Liam and Corey are no strangers to publishing their travel experiences. Their popular Irish Fireside Podcast includes an e-newsletter and blog, has appeared on BBC radio, consistently ranks among iTunes most popular travel podcasts and was nominated Best Travel Podcast by www.PodcastAwards.com.
When the thought of adding a US-based, cross-county roadtrip came up, they embraced the opportunity to spotlight the Irish on this side of the Atlantic.
“The trip started taking shape when our original flight to LA was canceled… gas prices had dropped and for the first time in many years, we had a reliable vehicle, so the idea for a roadtrip just felt right,” said Liam. After floating the idea to some of their most loyal subscribers, it was clear they would get a warm, Irish welcome every step of the way.
“The Irish are known for their hospitality,” said Corey, “so it’s no suprise that Irish-Americans have embraced the chance to invite us into their towns to share their stories and culture. It’s wonderful to feel so welcomed.”
LETTING THE AUDIENCE DECIDE
To make things a little more interesting, they’re letting their viewers help plan their itinerary. “We’re not creating reality TV here. We’re just being real,” Liam said. “If someone wants us to stop by for tea, we’re up for that. If they want to tell us about the business their great grandmother started, we want to want to hear it. This trip is about Irish-Americans past and present, and we’re looking forward to getting to know these people.”Anyone who would like to suggest Details are available at
The trip begins January 13 in Milwaukee and will continue through February 14. Details on contacting Liam and Corey as well as following the trip are available at www.IrishFireside.com.
