The Tale of the Irish Bees

The history of beekeeping is a long one in most cultures, and the Irish are no different. As mentioned in Early Medieval Ireland, 400-1200 by Dáibhí Ó Cróinín, honey was utilized as a sweetener in brewing ale and in making dairy spreads.

The Bee Laws

Bech Bretha (Bee Judgments) was a part of ancient Brehon Law. Ownership of hives was to be clearly determined. There were laws against stealing hives, and even compensation for those stung by another man’s bees. Destruction of bees was a grave offense and a devastating tradegy. The Annals of Ulster in 993 recorded a plague of people, animals and bees across the island.

Honey was not to be given to the ailing because it caused digestive problems, but owners of hives were expected to share their honey if their neighbors came down with a craving. I wonder if we could apply the same rule today to chocolate chip cookies.

The Monks as Beekeepers

The ancient monks were beekeepers, as were many common folks. Tracking a swarm of bees was one of the few activities the church allowed on Sundays. Beeswax candles came to be popular and beeswax was also used for practice writing tablets in monastery schools.

How the Irish Got Their Honey

Mo-Domnóc, a 7^th century Irish saint is traditionally credited with bringing the first honeybees to Ireland. Apparently he was working with the bees in a monastery in Wales, and when he returned to his native land he unknowingly brought the bees with him. Bees are so loyal that way, you know. They follow you, unless your name is Winnie the Pooh. In that case you have to go raid the hives. Mo-Domnóc’s bees, however, supposedly never returned to the Welsh monastery.

Some sources say that Mo-Domnóc was actually Welsh, not Irish. In that case this is something the Irish can thank the British for.

St. Gobnait, a 5th or 6th century nun from County Clare is the Irish saint of beekeepers. Gobnait is Irish for Abigail, but she’s also known as Deborah (Honeybee.)

For me, it was a visit to Woodstock Gardens in Inistioge, County Kilkenny. We wandered the gardens, and then when we tried to get a photo of Liam and me next to a California redwood… the camera wouldn’t work. The photo came out with haunting hands and hooves…

Truth is, there was low light and a long exposure on the digital camera… those hands were mine, but boy oh boy, getting back to the B&B and seeing the haunting hands kind of freaked us out.

Odd But Interesting

Now I wish I had done my homework. Of course I did glance at the plaque (and photographed it for future reference) and knew that it was a memorial to Guglielmo Marconi of wireless telegraph fame. I remembered that I had seen a memorial to Marconi in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. What I didn’t learn until later (and if you paid more attention in history class than I did you already know this) is that his mother, Annie Jameson, was Irish. (Yes, she was a Jameson Whiskey family member.) The monument in Ballycastle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, memorializes a venture he undertook there in 1898 to transmit a radio signal from a lighthouse on nearby Rathlin Island to White Lodge on Ballycastle harbor.

The American Connection

In Cape Cod the memorial is found in South Wellfleet where the first successful transatlantic wireless telegraph transmission originating in the United States was made in 1903. The message was made for President Teddy Roosevelt to England’s King Edward VII.

Well, okay. They are not really twin monuments, at least not visually. But there are two memorials marking the work of this Irish/Italian man, one in Ireland and one in America. Well, okay, there are more than two, but so far I’ve only seen two. I’ve since learned that there are many. Marconi traveled a great deal to find proper sites for his stations and many of these places set up memorials in his honor.

It’ s VIP week in Ireland with a visit from Queen Elizabeth just wrapping up and a stopover of President Obama firing up tomorrow. The program offers an evening of Irish tradition and family stories, going back into history and up into immigration days and into the present day. Christmas is a family time in Ireland still, and that’s part of the feeling that unfolds as the musicians invite you to join them through an evening of song and story which includes a mix of serious,funny, lighthearted, and reverent aspects of the season. There’s also the feeling of keeping connection through the changes of emigration. “Music was a way that people stayed close to home,” says show producer and Téada bandleader Oisin Mac Diarmada

Exceptional Irish Musicians

Over the five years it has been going, the show has featured artists including Karan Casey, Cara Dillon, Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, and Cathie Ryan. This year, top Irish singer and accordion player Séamus Begley from West Kerry rejoins cast for the second year in a row. For a show in Washington DC on December 10, Kerry vocalist Éilis Kennedy will also join in.

Harp player Grainne Hambly and piper Tommy Martin will add their talents, along with Irish dancer Brian Cunningham. Tristan Rosenstock will narrate and play bodhrán, Seán McElwain will handle bouzouki and guitar, and producer Oisín Mac Diarmada is an ace fiddler. Local Irish dancers will join as well in many cities along the tour.

THE NEW FACES OF THE IRISH FIRESIDE - Niamh Quirke and Ryan Andrews stars of RTE's popular soap opera "Fair City" are in line to take over as hosts of the popular Irish travel and culture podcast.

DUBLIN, Ireland – (April 1, 2010) – Ireland’s new Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism Mary Hanafin, TD, announced today that the Irish government has purchased the Irish Fireside, the Internet’s most popular Irish travel and culture blog and podcast.

“With the growing popularity of blogs, podcasts, social media and the launch of Apple’s new iPad, we see the Irish Fireside as a key to Ireland’s tourism recovery,’ said Hanafin. “2009 was a very difficult for us, and the Irish Fireside Holiday Giveaway was one bright spot in a year of dismal news. I love the Cliffs of Moher bookmark I won.”

The €1.2 million acquisition takes place today, but fans won’t notice changes right away. The Irish Fireside’s Liam Hughes and Corey Taratuta will remain on the blog’s editorial team, but they will likely be replaced on the podcast by Niamh Quirke and Ryan Andrews, up-and-coming stars of the popular Irish television drama “Fair City.”

“We felt it was important to have real Irish voices on the show that would resonate with the Internet’s youthful audience” said Hanafin. “Especially after it was revealed that one of the hosts wasn’t even Irish. We can’t have that.”

The news has already drawn criticism from local tourism offices. Orla O’Connor, a tourism officer from Kilcommon, County Tipperary said, “Tourism officials told me they couldn’t afford to send me more hotel brochures, but they can spend a million euro on some Internet fad. It’s an outrage. Do you realize how many fliers I could get for that?”

When asked what he intends to do with money from the sale, Liam Hughes said, “I think I’ll stay at one of those fancy Irish castle hotels. I can finally afford to stay in one, and they’re offering a book two nights get one free.” Taratuta reportedly was on his way to Idaho to begin talks with the producers of the Engaging Ireland Podcast.

It’s official, any visitor over age 66 can travel Ireland by train for FREE starting March 16. Pat Preston has posted all the details in her “All aboard! New rail perk launched for seniors visiting Ireland” article.

Here are the highlights:

• Travelers need to fill out the application at least 48 hours in advance
• Passes are issued in four day increments (multiple passes can be issued)
• Travelers will present their Golden Trekker confirmation with a passport or national identity card at the train station
• The pass is not valid in Northern Ireland

First, our suggestion that hotels would lead the charge for lower priced accommodations came with a nasty side effect – Zombie Hotels that will likely hurt the industry in the long run.

Then yesterday, Michele Erdvig from www.IrelandYes.com alerted us to news that a car rental shortage — especially automatic transmission vehicles that North Americans desire — might cause prices to skyrocket this season. That confirmed rental prices won’t be going down… in fact, after the Irish Times ran the article, some rental prices went up $4 a day.

And this morning, our concerns for an even quieter Shannon Airport were fueled. Aer Lingus is seriously considering plans to drop all long-haul flights from the west coast airport. The airline will likely announce their new “strategy” next month… we’ll keep our fingers crossed that they figure something out to keep Europe’s most tourist-friendly airport open for visitors from across the sea.

So What’s the Good News for Travelers?

All of these items are bad news for tourists, so what do we have to look forward to this year? Well, tourism is under the microscope at the moment, and it’s the one industry the Irish government seems to believe it can impact and profit from (even if their plans to put all their eggs in the UK basket could blow up in their face). So there are some positives for those traveling to the Emerald Isle this year…

Sweet Deals on Accommodations and Restaurants – While airfare and car rental prices are causing sticker shock for would-be visitors, hotels and B&Bs and restaurants are amping up their game… offering more for less and rewarding guests who stay a little longer.

Seniors Can Ride Irish Rail for Free – The government has moved forward on the plan we mentioned in our predictions to provide free rail transportation to seniors. That’s a double win for mature travelers… no car rental costs AND free train tickets.

Better Attitude Toward Tourism – The pendulum has swung yet again. As Irish emmigration is making a comeback, the Irish people have again become more sensitive to visitors. That includes a handful of astute government officials who are standing up for tourists by addressing fees, travel taxes, visa standards and several other issues that serve as barriers to growing tourism in Ireland. Psst, Irish officials, would you keep an eye on the car companies for us… they are among the LEAST tourist-friendly industries in Ireland — so much so, we had to tell our readers the 5 Things You Should Know When Renting a Car in Ireland.

They’ve already got some big names lined up… including Stacy Keach, Sir Roger Moore, Aidan Quinn and Geraldine Chaplin. We’ve got our fingers crossed for a Maureen O’Hara cameo!

We got our first peek at Pat and John Preston’s tours of Ireland when we met up with them and their group when they stopped in Adare. We had loads of fun, and it was clear that the tour members were enjoying the time of their life as well.

My mother Margaret, (nee Hogan), through stories and song, instilled in me at an early age a great sense of pride and interest in our Irish ancestry. I never fully understood the significance of those feelings until at age fifty-three my wife, Betty, and I traveled to the Emerald Isle for the first time. Since that first trip in 1997, we have made five more visits, most recently in June of 2006, each time having new and unforgettable experiences.

The best advice I received prior to that first trip came from a travel book, in which the author suggested reading all I could about Ireland including its history. For the better part of the year before our trip, I devoured every piece of Irish history and information I could get my hands on, including subscribing to “Ireland of the Welcomes,” a monthly publication promoting the wonders of that beautiful country. I began collecting and listening to traditional Irish music to the point where I now have about fifty CDs covering a wide range of Celtic music.

By the time we were ready to begin our Irish adventure, I was afraid I had built such high expectations that I might be disappointed. Nothing could have been further from the truth. The reality of Ireland far exceeded my wildest dreams and still does to this day. It is not just about the landscape – which is indeed beautiful, wild and remarkably green – it is about the people – their genuine friendliness, care and good nature. This fact has always amazed me, considering Irish life, until recently, has been so hard.

Centuries of oppression accompanied by tragic famines plagued the Irish through the mid 19th Century resulting in a decrease of millions of the population due to starvation, disease and emigration. Coincidently, no word in the Irish language (Gaelic) exists for “emigration,” only “banishment,” for why would anyone choose to leave such a beautiful place? For many of us who have had the good fortune to spend time in Ireland, the passionate pride and love of the Irish for their country is easily understood.

It is fairly common for people of Irish descent returning “home” for the first time to experience strong emotions during their visit to “the olde sod,” very similar to what Alex Haley described in his stirring book, “Roots.” I know a Native American man named Everett Largo who was born and raised on the Navajo Reservation near Shiprock, New Mexico. He swears that whenever he visits the old places where his ancestors lived, he can hear the whispers of past “Diné” (“The People”) and feel them as they lightly brush by. I believe this to be true because of similar experiences I and others have had while in Ireland, something I would refer to as our “genetic memory.” Much like the powerful instincts of animals, I believe we have stored in our mind memories of people, places and occurrences possibly from several centuries past.

As our plane passed over the Dingle Peninsula on its approach to Shannon Airport, I had this knowing sense of having come full circle since my Great-Grandfather, John Hogan, left his home of Coolboreen, County Tipperary, forever in 1865. Standing in a famine graveyard near Dungarvan, Co. Waterford, I felt that one or more of my relatives may have been buried among the hundreds of unmarked graves in that large open field. I could also see through my mind’s eye the scores of dead and dying children whose mouths were green from eating grass along the side of the road. As tears welled up and my throat tightened, I had a strange feeling that I had witnessed these events first-hand.

The harshness of that time, as well as many other difficult periods in Irish history, only makes me more proud and appreciative of my Irish heritage and the goodness of the Irish people.

Cliffs of Moher

corey says…It’s been a big year for County Clare’s Cliffs of Moher. First, the natural landmark moved one step closer to being named one of the 7 New Wonders of the World – they’ll need your help to win that one…they’re currently in the #9 spot, so cast your vote at www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/vote_on_nominees.

Secondly, they were named Best Irish Visitor Attraction at last night’s Irish Consumer Travel Awards. This is quite an honor for the County Clare attraction which opened an extensive new visitor centre in 2007.

Thousands of votes were registered when online voting took place between January 10th and March 31st 2009. Categories ranged from airlines, travel agents, tour operators, hotels, travel journalists, travel publications, destinations and, of course, visitor attractions.

The other nominees for the title included Blarney, the Giants Causeway, the Guinness Storehouse and Newgrange. corey says…Just got word that Ireland is a growing destination for Chinese tourists. Last year about 7,000 people visited Ireland from China, and this year experts are projecting 10,000.

Katherine Webster, Director of the Cliffs of Moher Visitor Experience, just returned from the World Travel Fair in Shanghai.

“Many of the Chinese tour operators I met told me that their most popular Irish itineraries were ones that started in Dublin and finished in Shannon and included a number of nights in the west as well as visit to the Cliffs of Moher,” explained Webster.

What are Chinese visitors to Ireland looking for in their trip? “It’s a very different market from the likes of the USA,” answered Webster. “Obviously the Chinese have thousands of years of history and culture behind them and they are not as impressed with antiquity as the Americans or the Australians. However, they have a great feeling for Irish traditional music – the Chieftains and Riverdance are well-known throughout China.”

“And they love the wild Atlantic coastline – it’s something they are not at all used to in China. They’re far more impressed with our natural attractions than our cities, which seems quite small stuff to them.”

Among these visitors biggest concerns…”Many Chinese are worried about visiting western countries due to their uncertainty about the food. While they may be prepared to try dining on Irish stew or bacon and cabbage or a try big Irish fry for breakfast, they don’t want to be stuck with this type of fare for their entire holiday.”

The BMC today announced plans to build a state-of-the-art automobile and train connection between Scotland and Northern Ireland. Engineers are currently evaluating whether a bridge or tunnel will provide the best link between the two islands. Above is one of six proposed plans to cross the 37km (23 mile) span.

The Irish government applauds the plan, noting that the bridge will connect both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland to the rest of Europe. Meanwhile, officials in County Clare Ireland have also announced their own plans to launch a feasibility study to evaluate a possible Ireland-North American bridge.

corey says…I think it’s safe to say that all of us around the Irish Fireside have tried something just because it is made in Ireland. We just can’t resist items from the “old sod,” right?

Well, that’s how I found myself wearing Bridgedale socks. Bridgedale has been knitting socks in Northern Ireland since 1910. That said, these aren’t your great-grandparents wool socks! They’ve got quite the lineup.

For the last six weeks, my feet have been cozying up to Bridgedales at least three days a week. The verdict…oh, I could get used to these.

Many of their socks are made for serious activity..like mountain hiking and other important activities… like walking and Irish-American Roadtripping

Luckily, I had two pairs, a heavier new wool blend and a lighter bamboo pair…having both proved useful on the roadtrip when we’d be in the desert one day and on a snowy mountaintop the next.

The socks have held up very well so far. The bamboo pair are showing some loose threads along the toe, but no signs of holes or wear. The true test…my feet don’t sweat in either of these socks…or at least they aren’t holding the moisture. Whew! Triumph!

So here’s on instance where I went with the emotional choice…in choosing socks of all things…and turned out very happy. And the good news the socks are available worldwide…not just in Newtownards, County Down. There’s more info at www.bridgedale.com

It’s clear a majority of Irish Fireside readers haven’t test-driven Twitter yet. So rather than explain what Twitter does, I thought I’d tell you what I learned in the last 24-hours from the people I “follow” on Twitter:

• Irish travel writer Pat Preston was working on chapter 22 of her new book
• Anne Roos played Metallica on the Celtic harp
• Musician Marc Gunn recorded another song for his album
• Shard jewelry maker Liam Hughes spent 13 hours cutting new pieces
• Ellen DeGeneres thought she just recorded her best show ever
• My mom transplanted flowers in her greenhouse
• There was a coupon code to save $50 on an Irish vacation
• My friend Wakako was congested and had to catch a flight
• The Two Guys Around the World bloggers got scammed by Thai Taxi drivers
• Learned more about Barack Obama’s Irish roots
• Followed a link to tips on typography in web pages
• Watched a 70-year-old woman sign up for Twitter
• Followed a link to a source for inexpensive business cards
• Discovered that iJustine eats a lot of pizza and edits a lot of video

These tidbits all happened in the last 24 hours, and they are all nuggets of information I would have missed without the 140 character “Tweets” of the people I am following on Twitter.

Sure, my life would be perfectly fine without knowing these details, but I like taking in these niblets of information. With only a glance, I can skim the info and continue with my day.

On the flip side, my own Tweets have helped me connect with people. I once Tweeted that I was hunting for a 1950s US map. Ten minutes later, a follower was giving me access to their scanned collection of vintage maps…that saved me an hour’s worth of work! I’ve had questioned answered in minutes. And my most simple statements have resulted in some enlightening dialog.

Twitter is not for everyone, but for those who are already quite tied to their computer or mobile phone, it can be a welcome addition.

Twitter Tips for Newbies

• Upload an Avatar (that’s a little picture to represent you) – You appear so much more Twitteriffic with an image next to your name rather than the ugly Twitter default icon.
• Fill Out Your Profile – Give a little info about yourself…nothing too personal, just a little intro, and be sure to include your website or blog if you have one.
• Start Following People You Know – Your friends, family and web sites you are familiar with are the best place to test Twitter. You can even use the “Find People” to help uncover people you already know on twitter. Twellow.com can be handy too.
• Remember Twitter is Public – Don’t post anything you don’t want announced to the world…that includes comments about your boss or someone’s cooking. FYI – you can “lock” your profile, so only people you approve can see your Tweets.
• Control Your Following – Follow the people with Tweets that interest you…if their Tweets aren’t holding your interest or if they Tweet more often than you care to read, unfollow them. This is not a popularity contest; you do not need to follow everyone who follows you. FYI – there are “advanced” ways to filter Tweets, but those are for experienced users.
• Block As Needed – It’s the Internet, so there will be spammers and weirdos. You can block users at your discretion.
• Browse – Once you find someone with similar interests, look at their list of followers and followees…you might uncover more great Twitterers.
• Make It Routine – Whether it’s twice a week or twice an hour, try to stay consistent while you “test drive” Twitter. After a little while, you will either get your own groove or you’ll decide it isn’t right for you.
• Keep Your Perspective – Although there are people out there proclaiming the virtues of Twitter and announcing how it increased their  sales, made them rich, enhanced their social lives. The truth is, Twitter is just a tool. It’s not going to replace all the other communication techniques you’ve developed over your lifetime. Success, happiness and wealth will still thrive without Twitter, but you already knew that.

corey says…It’s St Paddy’s Day already! The Irish-American Roadtrip really made the time fly. In truth, it feels like St Patrick’s Day started on January 13th for me. You can imagine how exhausted I’ll be on March 18th after two months of celebrating

Recession has hit Ireland, and for a country who seemed to think the Celtic Tiger economy would never end, it’s been rough going. The headlines in Ireland are quite similar to the United States – job losses, budget cuts, banking crisis, mortgage doomsday. The pendulum has swung, and the boom times are over…for now, as outlined in the New York Times article about the rise and fall of the Irish economy.

Familiar Headlines

This week Waterford Crystal announced it has gone into the equivalent of bankruptcy protection. Can’t say this is a surprise. On all four of my visits to the Waterford factory this summer with guests, the tour guides tossed out various explanations as to why the factory was operating with a skeleton crew…usually something mentioning employee holidays (no mention of “compulsory”  holidays). There are other headlines of Dell moving 2,000 jobs from Limerick to Poland and Aer Lingus not planning to make a profit in 2009 (which prompted the renegade discount airline Ryan Air to increase their bid for the company).

Yep, same doom and gloom stuff you’re reading in your hometown paper, right. Well, for those planning a trip to Ireland, a recession isn’t such a terrible thing…that is if you still have your job and your retirement hasn’t evaporated.

Stronger Dollar…or Maybe Just a Weaker Euro

The good news is that travel-related expenses for Ireland have either stayed the same or gone down for 2009. That is especially good news because the exchange rate is moving in favor Americans. Last summer for every €100 I spent, it cost me about $155 to $160 — today, every €100 is costing $135 to $140…that can make a HUGE difference for travelers. Just on account of the exchange rate, you could save $25 a night on your accommodations alone compared to last summer!

As for dropping prices, I just checked summer fares, and flights posted at $1,200 last month are now under $800. There’s no way to know how low they will go, but scoring high season flights under $800 was a triumph in 2008 and 2007. Conde Nast Traveler just published an article on how to get the best price on airfare.

B&B prices should come in the same or slightly lower than last summer as well. It’s in the luxury accommodations where you’ll find the biggest savings. They are desperate and offering deep discounts, so don’t be afraid to shop around and ask for their best price.

Another big advantage…the Irish themselves are tightening the purse strings. That means restaurants and shops are offering budget-minded options to attract customers. My Irish cousins tell me that all the stores are running the biggest sales they’ve ever seen, and everyone is looking for a bargain.

A few words of caution…tour operators and luxury accommodations in Ireland are suffering, and a handful are going out of business. That said, don’t panic, just make sure you are dealing with reputable companies and ask questions before you hand over cash. You can get some excellent advice on the matter from www.IrelandExpert.com, www.IrelandYes.com and www.dochara.com.

For those traveling in 2009, have GREAT TRIP, and although we might be in hard times…there should be some solace in knowing that you are getting a bargain this year.

Yesterday, my wife Betty and I had the honor and the pleasure, I might add, to meet a most remarkable lady in Mary McAleese, the current President of Ireland. She addressed the crowd of about 300 people packed inside the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix and was both charming and humorous in a very personal way.

Her story is remarkable in that she was born and spent her early years in the Ardoyne section of Belfast, a staunch “Loyalist” bastion in Northern Ireland where Catholics were, to put it mildly, not wanted. They finally were forced out…machine gun fire to their house, beatings, threats, etc.

Mary eventually received her law degree from Queen’s University in Belfast where she later returned to become the first female pro-vice Chancellor of her alma mater. She also spent several years as a law professor at Trinity College in Dublin and was a journalist for a time as well.

After her address, she made her way around the gathering taking time to shake hands and say hello. Both Betty and I were fortunate to meet her. When I told her I had read where she was once told by their parish priest that she could never become a lawyer because she was a girl and her mother promptly pulled the chair out from under him and told him to leave, Mary winked with a smile, and held her finger to her mouth saying “shh, we don’t talk about that any more”.

We also met the Irish Ambassador to the U.S. and his wife, and they both were charming and friendly as well. Along with the music and dancing it was a nice experience. The only thing I missed was not having an Irish Coffee. Oh well, I guess I’ll just have to wait for the holidays.

When asked what one is doing for the holidays, there are the usual answers: Off to grandma’s! Headed for the beach! Looking forward to a quiet holiday at home! Finally taking that Caribbean cruise! Well, I’ve done all those at one point or another, but a few years ago I began longing for an old-world type of Christmas. You know, one with roaring fires, hearty food, warm and comfortable beds, friendly and loving faces, ancient landscapes, rich history, and the piquant smell of mulled wine and mince pies in the air. Simple and easy requests, right?

Well, I knew I’d be unlikely to find that perfect Christmas here in the United States. I’ve gone to some places that came very close, most notably Blackberry Farm in the rolling hills of east Tennessee. But I knew I’d have to look to Europe if I was going to find just the right destination. I did a lot of research, thinking, pondering, and searching, but year after year I came up empty. Then, one day, I remembered watching a television promotion for an interview with Enya, the Irish singer. The host mentioned he would be visiting and talking with her at her “castle by the sea. Boom. That was it. A castle. Christmas in an Irish castle. And so it began…

For Christmas 2006, I made reservations for my mother and myself at Ashford Castle, located near the village of Cong in County Mayo. Ashford is a grand estate on the shores of Lough Corrib, and parts of the castle are nearly 800 years old. It has a fascinating history and an amazing reputation as a luxury hotel. Mom and I consider it our home away from home, and I cannot imagine a more perfect place to spend Christmas. Before we ever arrived, I knew it was going to satisfy my yearning for that old-world holiday, and it exceeded my expectations in every way. We returned in 2007, and we’re getting ready for our third trip in just a few weeks, and you can bet I’m looking forward to that mulled wine and those mince pies!

However, despite Ashford Castle being the centerpiece of our annual pilgrimage, I’m not going to say anything else about it. Why? Because it’s the easiest part of our trip. I know it’s going to be open, I know the food and accommodations will be superb, I know how much it will cost, and I know I can make arrangements to return next year before I check out this year! It’s predictable, simple, and hassle-free. The other aspects of a Christmas trip to Ireland aren’t quite so effortless. It’s my intention to share with you my experiences with planning a trip at an unusual time of year, and it’s my hope that I can help other travelers enjoy this marvelous land during the holiday season.

First question: what’s open?
The answer is not much! Finding special places to stay during the holidays is a tough prospect and is the most challenging part of planning our trip. Many privately-owned B&B’s, hotels, inns, guesthouses, and self-catering accommodations are closed starting in October or November. Even if they’re not closed for the season, several shut their doors for the month of December or during the weeks surrounding Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Although a few places (e.g. Ashford Castle) cater to travelers at this time of year, the vast majority have “no room at the inn.” However, this doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. You’ll probably have to do a good bit of research, emailing, and calling, but you’re sure to find some unique spots. The web is obviously a great resource, and a simple search for “Ireland B&B” or “Ireland hotels” will turn up a wealth of information and potential options, but make sure you invest the time and patience it takes to look through these many, many choices. TripAdvisor.com is a good place to peruse reviews from other travelers, but remember to take the opinions of others with a grain of salt. A bad review, especially in the context of many other positive reviews, may reflect more about the writer than anything else!

If you prefer a traditional guide book, my favorite is Alastair Sawday’s Special Places to Stay – Ireland. We’ve stayed at several of the properties he lists, many of which are very reasonably-priced, and we’ve been pleased (or even thrilled!) with every one of them. The Sawday guides are also online (www.sawdays.co.uk), and most listings include closing dates, though it’s always best to verify such information directly. I can’t stress enough the importance of patience during this process! In planning our trip for Christmas 2008, I spent weeks and weeks trying to find new and distinctive spots to rest our heads. I hit a lot of dead ends and became accustomed to frustration, but it all worked out, and we’re looking forward to a trip that will be familiar and totally different at the same time.

Next question: how much will it cost?
The answer is a lot, but maybe not as much as you’re thinking. Holiday airfares are generally high compared to other times of the year, and flights may be limited. For example, we’d prefer to fly from Atlanta (where I live) to Shannon, but there aren’t any nonstop flights between those two cities during the winter months. We could connect in another city, which might even same us some money, but that would compound the risks of lost luggage, delayed or canceled flights, and long layovers (not to mention how much harder it would be on my mom, who is in her 70’s). As of my writing this article, roundtrip nonstop coach between Atlanta and Dublin is running in the $800-$900 range. Other cities and flights could vary significantly in price, but expect to pay a premium for air travel during the holiday season. As always, keep an eye on fares, and book as soon the price falls into a range you’re comfortable with.

Accommodation in Ireland can cost a fortune or a farthing, and you have two forces working in opposition to each other. Most hotels, B&B’s, guesthouses, and inns consider December to be low season, and rooms are priced accordingly. It’s possible to get a twin or double room at a very nice property for less than 100 euro, including a full breakfast. However, as I’ve already mentioned, your choices are likely to be incredibly limited, so you may be forced to consider more expensive places out of necessity, depending on your itinerary. Look for special internet or discounted rates, and never be afraid to plead poverty to the manager or owner! Most innkeepers know that low season can mean empty rooms, so they may be more willing to make a deal with you.

Next question: what do we do in Ireland at Christmas?
This is a tough one, and I don’t have a one-line answer! First of all, no matter where in Ireland you are, don’t expect to do much of anything on Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day (Dec 26). Everything is closed, public transportation is minimal, and you’ll be lucky to find a gas station that’s open for business! However, the roads, lanes, fields, and churches will welcome you with open arms, so plan a day or two of hiking, scenic driving, or worship. There are plenty of stone circles, passage tombs, ruined abbeys, beautiful vistas, and neolithic sites to see. Your accommodation may offer activities, or the staff/innkeeper may be able to recommend some things to do in the area.

If you’re in one of the larger cities (e.g. Dublin, Cork, Galway, etc.), then expect the holiday season to be bustling. Shopping is a big deal in modern Ireland, and a trip to Grafton Street in Dublin will prove it to you. Of course, museums, libraries, historic sites, and other tourist spots may be a priority as well. We’ve found that some attractions do close in the off season, but most of these tend to be in smaller towns or out in the countryside.

Speaking of countryside, what a time of year to have your own car in Ireland! If you’ve got the mettle to brave the rural Irish roads…then you have my sympathy – just kidding! Although driving in Ireland can certainly be harrowing for Americans who are accustomed to wide roads, extra lanes, and shoulders, having a car gives you so much more freedom to explore. You’ll never feel like your stuck in one place or at the mercy of anyone or anything else, and you’re free to stop and explore the odd ruin, churchyard, pub, museum, or landscape. Most car rental companies seem to have decent rates during the holidays, but shop around before you book, and do make sure you reserve something in advance since walk-up rates might not be as good.

A few other thoughts…
Eating and drinking in Ireland probably deserves its own article, but for now I’ll advise you (yet again) to plan ahead for Christmas Day and St. Stephen’s Day. No matter where you are, don’t expect there to be a restaurant around the block (or within 100 km!) that’s open for business. If you have the facilities to cook for yourself, then consider it a treat to browse the remarkably fresh, unique, and high-quality items available in most Irish groceries. If you want or need to eat out, make reservations as far in advance as possible. Outside of those two days, most restaurants are open and tend to be more crowded with holiday celebrants before Christmas than after.

Ok, here’s something I wasn’t prepared for when we first visited Ireland. We arrived in Shannon around 7:00am, and it was pitch dark. Ditto at 8:00am. The sun was just beginning to creep into the sky by around 8:30am, and it didn’t really get light until well after 9:00am. Then, it starts to get dark again around 3:00 in the afternoon! Sunset comes about 5:00pm! At the time, I didn’t appreciate the fact that Ireland is on the same latitude as much of Canada, and it’s a heck of a lot closer to the Arctic Circle than Atlanta, Georgia! So, be prepared for short winter days, which might or might not be a bad thing depending on your point of view. We see it as an excuse to make a cocktail, hoist a Guinness, find a warm fire, and/or enjoy the company of fellow travelers.

One more word on the weather – the average high in Dublin in December is 47F/8C, and the average low is 38F/3C, so it’s not sunny Spain or the Mexican Riviera! Average precipitation can range significantly from 4.8” in Galway on the west coast to 3” in Dublin on the east coast, so pack rain gear, but keep in mind that Ireland is a wet country at most times of year anyway! We’ve never encountered any torrential downpours, but misting rain, fog, and showers seem to be fairly common, though there have been gorgeous sunny days as well. We’ve yet to enjoy a white Christmas, but there’s always the chance!

Whew, that all seems like a lot of information, but it really just scratches the surface! I hope you’ve found this article useful and informative, and I really hope it inspires you to consider Ireland as a place to spend the holidays. Let me make one thing clear: all the planning, stressing, emailing, and worry that I have put into these trips is so worth it! Once your plane lands and you get clear of customs (and Dublin traffic!), your cares will melt away, and you’ll begin to enjoy the holidays in a unique and genuine way.
