Winter Solstice at Newgrange

For over 5,000 years a mystical celestial event has occurred in Ireland. On the winter solstice every year the rising sun penetrates a 60-foot-long passageway inscribed with mysterious carvings and lights up the interior chamber of Newgrange. Is it a tomb? A temple? A calendar? Perhaps we will never know the Neolithic mind-set that built such a complicated monument.

Although described by archaeologists as a passage grave, Newgrange keeps its secrets. Why is the inner chamber lit up for 17 minutes at the solstice – and for several days on either side of that date? What is the meaning of the triple spiral symbol inside the cave-like chamber and the beautiful abstract art inscribed on the stones? Why are we today fascinated by an ancient pile of rocks? Thousands of articles and hundreds of books raise more questions than answers.

Instead go to Newgrange at Brú na Bóinne and see for yourself. Walk where the ancients walked. View prehistoric carvings and Viking graffiti. Marvel at the sparkling wall of white quartz interspersed with granite boulders. Gaze out over the majestic Boyne River Valley. Touch the weathered standing stones. Enter the cramped passageway into the surprisingly large inner chamber with its corbelled roof. Listen to the history and legends of warriors, gods and kings.

There’s no shortage of information about County Kerry, Ireland, but I couldn’t help feeling enchanted by the place hearing Jessie Voigts talk about Ireland’s most famous corner on The Amateur Traveler Podcast.

Gotta admit, Jessie’s giggle is contagious, and she was was quite honest about the Kingdom County’s abundance of tourists while still showcasing its appeal. Yes, it’s got a lot of tourists. Yes, it’s got must-see sites. Yes, there are still some lesser-known experiences to be found.

A chance encounter and shared moment with one of natures greatest and most fleeting phenomena.

In one of nature’s amazing occurances, two British women captured a flock of starlings (known as a murmur) over Lough Derg.

To tell the story of his grandfather’s life, Daniel McGarrigle turned to film, animation, and the “Sharing Stories” project run by the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny (Republic of Ireland) and the Nerve Centre in Derry (Northern Ireland).

As part of a social media experiment, “Sharing Stories” is using YouTube and Facebook to promote Daniel’s film “Brighter Days.” Over the next three weeks, they will track how people use social media to view and share the film, and they will present that information to show how artists can use technology to reach an extended audience.

Colm Melly (Daniel’s grandfather) was born in 1923 and lives in Glenties, county Donegal.

Daniel McGarrigle was born in Derry in 1986 and raised in Letterkenny, County.Donegal. A keen artist from a young age, his academic achievements include an MA in Motion Graphics, a Bachelors Degree in Design for Visual Communication and a BTEC Diploma in Art & Design.

More recently Daniel has been an Artist in Residence at the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny, county Donegal and worked as a graphic designer as well as a documentary film director and editor. Daniel currently lives in Toronto, Canada.

Ireland’s Harry Clarke created masterpieces of stained glass. Although he died young his reputation was comparable to Tiffany. His art can be found worldwide but Ireland contains the largest concentration of his glorious artwork.

It may be unpredictable, but Ireland manages to be beautiful no matter what Mother Nature kicks up. Enjoy this video collection of images from Irish Weather Online.

Many Americans visiting Ireland for the first time have a stereotypical view of what Ireland is. They expect thatched cottages around every bend, sheep dotting the landscape, dancing at the crossroads, rainbows and leprechauns. Although I have yet to meet a leprechaun I have seen plenty of rainbows and sheep. But – alas – thatched cottages are a dying breed and to find them you must go searching or stumble across them.

In this “Hollywood” film of a bucolic Ireland of 1934 I can read between the lines and see plenty of hard work and poverty. Much as we tend to romanticize old Ireland it was and is a real place where people live and not the Disneyland of our imaginations. Those traveling to Ireland can find remnants of the past everywhere but they should leave their rose-colored glasses at home. Instead they can enjoy Ireland of today with enticing glimpses of Ireland’s storied past.

Megaliths: Stone Circle from Mark Long on Vimeo.

Drombeg Stone Circle, also known as the Druids Altar is one of Ireland’s most famous Bronze Age monuments. Also present at the site is a Fulacht Fiadh or ancient communal cooking pit.

Derrara Standing Stone is located in the grounds of the Sacred Heart Church. Standing Stones are sites of ancient religious ceremonies, sometimes containing burial chambers.

The wedge tomb at Island Bridge, Burnfort, Cork, Ireland, was constructed in the early Bonze Age. Evidence of cremated burial was found in several areas of the main chamber, as well as worked flint and scrapers.

Tall Ships leave Dunmore East from onefortynine on Vimeo.

Waterford hosted the exciting Tall Ships Festival earlier this month, and this adventurous kayaker used his camera to capture the ships in open water.

This one is definitely worth watching for the views of the gorgeous coast, lighthouse, and of course the tall ships (which come into view at about the 1:30 mark).

An Irish pub in Denville, NJ, will be going for a traditional thatched roof… which will cost the equivalent of about 7,000 pints of Guinness. Along with the video above there is a nice article to accompany it called Thatcher’s traditional craft lends Irish ambience to Denville bar.

Looks like a fun time in the Irish-speaking Connemara region of Ireland.

Hidden in plain sight, Cork’s indoor English Market offers a secret city within the center of town. After Ireland With Kids reminded us Don’t Miss the English Market in Cork and RTÉ Radio 1′s Documentary called Cork’s Hidden Village, I’m keen to return.

My favorite line from the documentary came from a merchant who followed in her mother’s footsteps in the market, “My mother fed Cork.” That comment summed it up… people in the market really do see themselves as a vital part of the community. I must say, the documentary also shows us there are some wonderful characters selling in the market as well.

The notable pottery produced in Belleek has been produced for 150 years. Tours of the factory get you up close to the craftspeople as they work.

Tomorrow is 12th of July, a day members of The Orange Order commemorate the 1690 Battle of the Boyne when the Dutch Protestant King William of Orange defeated his father-in-law, Catholic King James ll of England and Vll of Scotland.

A couple years ago, Heidi McAlpin, editor of Belfast In Your Pocket, took Liam and me on a tour of the Belfast bonfires held on the eve of the 12th. It was quite an experience. What It Was Like

I’m often asked, “Did you feel safe while you were there during the Marching Season?” Truth is, in the days leading up to the visit, I was uncertain what to expect. Someone told me “if something bad is going to happen, it’ll be then.” That convinced me I was doing something edgy.

Once in Belfast, the experience didn’t feel all that adventurous. It was much like any other city during a large festival… roads closed for the bonfires and parades, extra police presence, plenty of people drinking and having a good time. City centre and the docklands were shiny, clean, and eager for visitors. Meanwhile some of the outer neighborhoods were slightly grimy, and the suburbs were lush with gardens and trees that knicked the top of the open top bus tour.

The bonfires on the 11th compared to many 4th of July celebrations in the US (except a large portion of the population simply doesn’t participate). The only things that made me a bit uneasy was the increasing number of drinking party-goers as the night of the 11th wore on… I had been to enough 4th of July festivities in the US to know that people can get a little sloppy when they start the party in the early afternoon.

On the 12th, we spent two hours at the parades. Mind you, the parades went on longer than that. Liam and I simply tired of the endless stream of drums, flutes, and flags after two hours. We slipped off to the Tourist Office to pick up a headset for the self-guided Titanic Walking Tour instead.

We’ll probably be seeing more of these types of videos as the mini, hyper-sturdy camera they used, the GoPro, is becoming more an more popular.

Fortunately, FunTravelGuy.com kept his video slideshow moving swiftly… as you can see, they saw a lot of the major attractions in Ireland. I love the “You Should Be Here” and other comments peppered into the show. And a big gold star for taking good notes on places and placenames… I have a feeling I know who the rest of the family will call with questions like, “What was that place in Ireland we were at… you know, the place with the sheep…”

Michele Erdvig of www.irelandyes.com pointed me to this “archival” footage from an old Eurovision segment from 1971! It features the Bunratty Castle Singers and many “classic” (or is that stereotypical) scenes in Ireland. The music is great craic and the scenes offer a perfect blend of cheesy and nostalgic. Gotta love the 70s.

You can still attend a medieval banquet at Bunratty… I kind of wish they brought back the costumes from the video though. They offer a traditional music night in the Corn Barn at Bunratty as well (in fact, Michele tells me that the fiddler from the video still performs at the Corn Barn).

Jill does an excellent job of recounting the highlights of her trip to Ireland with her Dublin > Clare > Galway itinerary. Sounds like a fantastic trip!

Last year, actor Gabriel Byrne was named Ireland’s Cultural Ambassador. In that time he has worked to promote Irish art in the United States, and it’s interesting to hear his take on the Obama visit and Irish art.

But I must confess, for anyone who has seen twin Irish pop stars who call themselves Jedward (they were in Eurovision), Byrne’s impersonation is spot on!

Cue the regal music, dapple the light through the trees, bring in the curious deer, set the wine glasses, fill the claw-footed tub with steaming water. Flowers, we need more flowers!

A few years ago, we were invited to Belfast during The Twelfth celebrations in the city. On the eve of the biggest day in the Orange Order calendar, Protestant neighborhoods throughout the city light bonfires… some being quite large. This photo shows the one from the Shaw’s Bridge area.

I’ve been to a lot of markets in Ireland, but I certainly didn’t have the keen eye of Jason Ludlow. He’s a tourist from South Africa who picked up an American first edition copy of Emily Bronte’s classic Wuthering Heights for €3. The same book sells for €8,000!

He found the treasure at the Limerick Milk Market. One of the largest of its kind in Ireland, it has been around since 1852, but has undergone some major upgrades in the last year.

Tuning in has made me realize just how basic my knowledge of Irish history really is. For example, I waaaay over simplified the Viking’s historic involvement in Ireland – there was a lot more going on than they came, they conquered… then they became Irish. And all those Irish kings… they spent as much time duking it out among themselves as they did battling outside forces. Then there’s all that St Patrick business.

As RTE, Ireland’s national television station, celebrates the second anniversary of their online player, viewers around the world can continue enjoying some of Ireland’s best television programs on their computer screens. What’s that, you say? You haven’t been tuning in to Irish TV.

Well then, may I suggest you start with a program like Nationwide which features human interest stories and cultural events from across the island. Their most recent episode puts the Dingle Peninsula and the craftspeople of County Kerry in the spotlight. It’s official. Barack Obama is making his way to Ireland in May. Like Ronald Reagan’s visit to Ballyporeen in County Tipperary in 1984, a presidential visit is big news in Ireland… especially for a tiny Irish village that wouldn’t normally make it on the tourist route.

Rosie O’Donnell recently appeared on the NBC program Who Do You Think You Are? Many Irish-Americans will relate to her search for her roots. Rosie’s moving story begins with a mysterious photo of a woman that hung in her childhood playroom. That photo later reveals relatives she didn’t know existed, a French-Canadian connection and finally, a visit to Ireland… where she learns to drive on the left and experience Ireland’s coldest winter on record (it’s amazing to see Ireland covered in snow).

Ali, the three-time World Heavyweight Champion, was named the first Honorary Freeman of Ennis in 2009 in recognition of his career achievements and his ancestral links with the Clare County Capital. Over 15,000 people watched ‘The Greatest’ receive a Civic Reception before embarking on a drive through the streets of Ennis and a personal visit to the ancestral home of his great grandfather Abe Grady.

Grady emigrated from County Clare to the United States in the 1860s. He eventually settled in Kentucky, where he married an African-American woman. Their son also married an African-American and one of the daughters of that union was Ali’s mother, named Odessa Lee Grady. She married Cassius Clay, senior, and they settled in Louisville, where their son was initially given his father’s name on his birth in 1942.

Moneygall is a speck of a town on the busy N7 route between Dublin and Limerick (and just happens to be a few miles from Liam’s family in Tipperary). Aside from the locals, the main street doesn’t see visitors.

After pulling into town, I was worried I misunderstood the spot where I was to meet Megan and Stephen. I stopped in a shop with a big glass window overlooking the street and asked, “Any chance you’ve seen an American woman with very blond hair walk by today?”

“Hmmm. There was a woman I didn’t know come through, but she was dark. There were two men in a silver car, they went into the shop across the street — couldn’t tell you who they were. Was she in a red car? There was a red car – didn’t see who was inside.” She paused for a beat then asked, “Have you seen the Obama sign? Just went up a fortnight ago.”

The folks in Moneygall indeed know what’s going on in their town.

Obamania

The town is certainly embracing their Obama connection, and the American Ambassador to Ireland has taken an interest in the village as well… a possible hint that a presidential visit might be in the cards for Moneygall.

After our time in Moneygall, Megan and I couldn’t resist sharing what we learned with the rest of the world. The end result is a downloadable brochure that includes photos and a map of the Obama-related sites. We also included information about other U.S. Presidents with ties to Ireland. Although Skellig Michael has been on my want-to-see list for years, I had no idea what I was in for when I got there. Here’s a quick look at my thoughts:

Firstly, it was gorgeous… especially with a clear day like we had. The views of the ocean, Little Skellig island, sea birds, dolphins, seals and the construction of the stone beehive huts and churches were all above expectation.

The 1,000+ year old steps built by the monks were scary, and a tumble could be deadly, but I found them quite manageable. One woman who was afraid of heights climbed them on her hands… once she was within the monastery walls, she seemed to forget that she had crawled over 600 feet to get there.

We had about two hours on the island itself, which was enough to see everything, but I certainly would have liked to stay much longer… on a bad weather day, I can imagine many folks would be ready to leave much sooner though… there’s not much shelter, and, no, public toilets are not available on the island.

I underestimated the boat trip. Although the crossing varies depending on where you launch from and which boat you take, my trip clocked in at 50 minutes on “moderate” seas. The skipper told us the seas were about a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 (they sail up to a 7, but he said they warn people that it will be a “very scary trip” when the seas are that rough). A 3 was enough for me to feel nauseous for about half the trip. I didn’t vomit, but I couldn’t say the same for the other people on the boat. The trip back from the island was a bit calmer.

For those who prefer staying on shore, a visit to the Skellig Experience on Valencia Island near Portmagee gives a good look at the history and wildlife of the islands (Skellig Michael and Little Skellig). From there, you can also take a boat trip around the islands… they do not stop on Skellig Michael.

Improvements are already underway on buildings surrounding the new complex, and as the city prepares for next summer’s Tall Ships Races, Waterford will likely begin unveiling its new look — a pedestrian-friendly hub of activity. Quite an achievement for a city that always seemed to struggle balancing its commerce, cultural, tourism, civic and business offerings.

Improved Visitor Experience at the Crystal Factory

The showroom and factory tours are top-notch… it’s hard to believe the building was a wreck only six months ago! The factory is significantly smaller than the old facility, and the tour feels much less like a cattle call. In fact, the new tour keeps a relaxed pace and offers plenty of time for photos and questions. Best of all, there are very few barriers between the visitors and the workers… in the middle of our tour, the glass cutter even took a moment to chat with a particularly interested member of our group.

Getting to the New Waterford Crystal Factory

Driving routes to the factory are well sign-posted (just look for the trademark Waterford seahorse). Driving in city centre can be a bit challenging but manageable. There is a large car park behind the factory, but it may fill up at peak times, so visitors could look to the southeast end of the quay for additional parking. It is unlikely that visitors will find free parking in city centre; the main lot charges €1.80 per hour for cars. I would allot 1-1/2 to 2 hours for the tour and showroom.

The bus depot is located on the quay and should take less than a 20-minutes on foot. Walking from the train station will likely add less than ten minutes. Taxis are available from both.

Crystal Production and Purchases

It’s wonderful to know crystal is again being produced in Waterford. However, the factory just opened last month and production levels are quite low. As a result, most pieces of crystal are being produced in Waterford’s other factories throughout the world. That said, the showroom provides one of the most enjoyable venues for browsing Waterford Crystal products, so bring your credit card.

On the topic of credit cards, it looks as though the credit card machines at the factory, visitor centre and cafe default to offering dynamic currency exchange. That means your card will automatically be charged in your home currency – the amount you see on the slip, in say US dollars, is exactly what will appear on your credit card statement. The service will cost you fee of 3-5% of your purchase (already added to the total on your slip), which will only add a few pennies to a tour ticket, but could add up for those buying crystal.

The centre also features a cafe that specializes in desserts, wraps and offers a variety of beverages. The rhubarb tart and black forest gateaux were quite tasty

The Pride of Waterford

One thing that stood out from my visit to Waterford was the pride of place. The people working at the House of Waterford repeatedly displayed a sense of honor in how their crystal heritage was raised from the brink of extinction, and it came back in great form. I was especially pleased that I was wished an Irish greeting from one of the staff as I left the building… Waterford pride, Irish pride, it’s well deserved!

Factory Tours: Mon – Sat, 9am to 4pm; Sun, 10:30am to 4pm

Admission: Adults €10.50; Students/Seniors €8; Family (2 adults + 3 children) €28.50

Morning Coffee on Dublin's Bloom's Lane

Back in 2008, Tourism Ireland sponsored an audio series that featured travel highlights from short vacations to Galway, Belfast, Cork or Dublin. The four-part series targeted UK travelers, but the information and style appealed to any visitor. The episodes with their fast-paced contributions from reporter Michael Traboulsi offer on-the-spot interviews and commentary on the places he visits. Fortunately, the program is still available as a podcast.

We hear from Bernard McMullen about the affects the volcano in Iceland has had on Irish travel and we have a guest who had to change her plans for Ireland because of the volcanic ash.

Our apologies in advance, we didn’t have access to our usual recording equipment, so this episode sounds a bit different than others.

Note: These interviews were conducted on Tuesday, April 20, 2010. Since then Irish airspace has opened and airlines are working their way back to normal service.
