Theresa - How wonderful that you'll be in Ireland for the Christmas Holiday. You're hosts in Tralee are showing the hospitality the Irish are famous for... I'm surprised she didn't invite you to enjoy their own holiday goose ;)

Thanks so much for the information! We are going for 15 days to Ireland in just a little less than 1 month, December 2009. We are renting a car and staying in B&B’s all around Ireland. Having never been before, we are looking for a great adventure. Eileen at the B&B in Tralee where we will spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day has offered us the use of her kitchen for cooking dinner, and even offered to order a turkey from her butcher for me. My Irish mother is as excited about my trip as my husband and I are! Again, thanks for the tidbits, they just stoked my excitement!

Winston - Thanks for the update. So glad you had a great trip. A lot of people have read this article, some for the advice and others who just want to dream about Christmas in Ireland. We all appreciate that you took the time to share it.

Many thanks to everyone and anyone who took the time to read my article. We just returned from Ireland yesterday and had a fabulous time. The weather was great (not too cold and no rain!), and we enjoyed Irish warmth and hospitality everywhere we went. Ashford Castle lived up to my expectations yet again, but so did the other wonderful places where we stayed. We're already booked for Christmas 2009, and I'll be counting the days. Happy new year!

Christmas at Ashford Castle !! Now that is very, very special. Done it myself but as you indicate book well, well ahead in advance as some Irish corporate executives book rooms in Ashford year after year for their families.

Ashford Castle is for anytime, but to the public it is not cheap. However, I am on a short list of agents who get up to 75% off offers to fill rooms when their booking is slow. Last year even got folks in on a July Saturday for 100 euros per person, which is a giveaway for Ashford.

Weather has turned mild and quite sunny here now in West and North West Ireland and looks like continuing through Christmas. Some showers and rainbows too.

Good to be here at Christmas if you can find accommodation, and away from the cities so you can enjoy real Irish craic.

Winston,
Imagine my complete delight when I discovered this article...not only are we from Atlanta, but we are also going to Ireland for Christmas and we will be staying at Ashford Castle. And yes, planning a trip to Ireland at Christmastime is challenging! Our family spent another Christmas in Ireland (1999); we stayed at Dromoland Castle. It was wonderful, and have dreamed of returning (and staying at Ashford) ever since. We even had several inches of snow while we were there.

Thank you for your wonderful article (and the picture of the Christmas tree at Ashford). I hope to meet you while we are there and tasting the mulled wine and mince pies!
